CSVPA Boston connects students with industry expertise

8 July 2020

Students took part in guest lectures from theater and fashion industry experts. Delivered via video conference, those looking to progress to a top art school in America got practical advice and a wealth of interactive experience.

Mairi Clare Cushley from multibillion-dollar fashion giant, VF Corp, has over 20 years’ experience in the business of fashion, working for the likes of Ralph Lauren, Diesel, and the British School of Fashion.

Jay Armstrong is a bona fide Broadway star. His stage credits include On the Town, Hands on a Hardbody, Catch Me If You Can, Hair, and the iconic Phantom of the Opera.

What were the lectures about?

Mairi spoke on the importance of collaboration in the fashion industry. From what makes successful collaborations, to case studies of the business’ most effective teams. The talk covered creative and commercial elements, from design pitfalls to the mechanisms of bringing an idea to market.

Students also heard about building sustainability into the collaborative concept, and had the chance to present their own projects for feedback.

Jay’s lecture drew on extensive practical experience to help students nail the on-camera interview. With lessons from his own life and career, Jay focused on the actor’s three channels of communication on screen; the body, the voice, and the face.

This highly interactive lecture gave students a deeper understanding of how to sell a performer’s most valuable asset: themselves.
